winboard + polyglot+ rybka 2.3.2 comp freezes

Postby e_madero » 17 Jul 2010 06:29

Hi, I am installing winboard, polyglot and rybka, when I run winboard around 200 rybka processes starts over and eats up my 2GB RAM, in 3 mins the computer doesnt make 1 move. If I close winboard all the rybka processes remains alive, I have to kill them manually. I think this might be a problem on the configuration here are my .ini files:

polyglot.ini

[Polyglot]
Enginename=Rybka 2.3.2
EngineDir=C:\WinBoard-4.4.3\WinBoard\Chess Engines\Rybka232
EngineCommand=Rybka
Book=true
BookFile=C:\WinBoard-4.4.3\WinBoard\Chess Engines\Rybka232\Rybka.bin
Log=false
LogFile=
[Engine]
Hash = 32
NalimovPath =
NalimovCache = 16
OwnBook = false
UCI_LimitStrength = true
UCI_Elo = 2400
Permanent brain = true
Playing Style = Killer
Rate Of Play = Ultrafast
Outlook = Neutral
Time Usage = Varied
CPU Usage = 100
Max CPUs = 2048
Emergency Time Buffer = Medium

winboard.ini

/firstChessProgramNames={"Rybka2.3.2" /fd="C:\WinBoard-4.4.3\WinBoard\Polyglot\Rybka232" /fcp='polyglot'
}

;; this was the only modification I made

Thanks in advance,

Well I see the problem immediately, but do this, it is better.

Make sure you are using the latest polyglot here. If you used the WB 4.4.3 installer then your good, although there is a newer one on that site if you want it.

Make sure polyglot is in the same folder as your winboard.exe

Stick Rybka in what ever folder you wish; could be the "Engines" folder in the "Winboard" folder

Open your winboard.ini

Make sure the winboard.ini has this
Code: Select all
/polyglotDir="."
/adapterCommand='polyglot -noini -ec "%fcp" -ed "%fd'

And launch rybka with this
Code: Select all
"Rybka2.3.2.exe" /fd="Engines\Rybka232\" -fUCI

note: the /fd command doesn't have to have the full directory. It can use a directory relative to the Winboard.exe. This allows you to put the Winboard folder on a pen drive and will still work.

Also this way you don't have to mess any messy polyglot.ini file. To change polyglot and engine settings open the "Engine #1 settings" in the Option Menu. And hit "save" when you have your settings decided. This includes selecting they Rybka Opening book.

And launch rybka with this

Code: Select all
"Rybka2.3.2.exe" /fd="Engines\Rybka232\" -fUCI

where would you put this specifically in the winboard ini?

Srry.

You would add the line to the /first/secondChessProgram lines. If there is another engine there just hit enter somewhere between the { } marks and and the line there.
e.g.

/firstChessProgramNames={"Gnuches5.exe xboard" /fd="Engine\gnuchess5"
"Rybka2.3.2.exe" /fd="Engines\Rybka232" -fUCI
}
/secondChessProgramNames={"Gnuches5.exe xboard" /fd="Engine\gnuchess5"
"Rybka2.3.2.exe" /fd="Engines\Rybka232" -fUCI
}
-------------------
Even more popular amongst other winboard users who have a lot of engines, is to use a tournament manager like PSWBTM to mange the engines. It keeps them alphabetically and you can run round robins and gauntlets with your engines.

In the engine manager window, just remember to add
WBopt /%sIsUCI true
in the parameters setting if the engine is UCI.
This will work so long as you have polyglot setup the way I described above.

Also you have to tell PSWBTM where winboard is in the PSWBTM options window. This can be a relative directory too.

What you are doing sounds OK, and I would have expected it to work. Making a Polyglot log, and posting it here, would be a good idea. Note that you can also switch on the Polyglot logging from the WinBoard Engine #N Settings dialog, by ticking "log", and possibly altering the name of the LogFile.
