*** WARNING***BE AWARE OF POSSIBLE YAHOO COPS***

Postby matematiko » 01 Mar 2009 04:34

After two days, today I notice again Yahoo's new welcome message to any games room:

abuse1.JPG

And the window that pops up after double clicking in a users ID has changed as well, now it actually does have the Report Abuse button:

abuse2.JPG

Since the first time I saw this welcome message few days ago, I was wondering how Yahoo is planning to implement it. Is this just a threat? Or Yahoo is actually planing on doing something about the users that get reported? Well I don't know but we need to be prepared for anything. If the "report abuse" program is actually implemented, I don't think Yahoo will ban or de-activate a user ID automatically just because somebody reported it. I think that when someone is reported, the user ID and the name of the room will be sent to a Yahoo Administrator, which in turn is gonna go to the room in question and verify the report. Because of this, I expect, begining today, to start seeing Yahoo Administrators in the games room. Why should we be concerned? Even thou this report abuse program is intended to minimnize spamming, we need to remember that there are many users that hate us (program users) and they might and they will report us.

What can we do?
We can do nothing and see what will happen...or :
We can turn on the "retreat" function in YaY, this function is off by default but when turned on, YaY will exit if a Yahoo Admin is detected in the room.

To turn it on, open YaY.cfg with notepad and search for:
Code: Select all
********************************************************************************
Do you want YaY to exit if a Yahoo Administrator joins the lobby?
variable30 0
********************************************************************************

and change it to:
Code: Select all
********************************************************************************
Do you want YaY to exit if a Yahoo Administrator joins the lobby?
variable30 1
********************************************************************************

Be aware that if you are playing a game and the retreat function is turned on and if a Yahoo Admin enters the lobby, YaY will exit regardless and you'll lose the game.

The retreat function is implemented in YaY 3.1 as well as YaY 3.2

Good luck,

Thanks Matematiko... this is exactly what i was referring to regarding disconnection in the middle of the game...somebody must have triggered the abuse button to get you disconnected...anybody can hit the button specially if they're losing the game..

Sorry tadjock, but Yahoo does not work like that.... the disconnections were due to something else....YaY will not disco itself just like that....."retreat" needs to be on and a Yahoo Administrator needs to come to the room.

Cheers,

Is it really possible to detect when a yahoo administrator enters a game room? Usually i thought they can enter the game room invisible. And the Report Abuse button I don't see it in chess, I only see it available in pool rooms, is this the same for everyone?

You are right, so far only in pool rooms, but I guess is just a matter of time before they come to chess rooms. If they come invisible (a better term is undercover) there is not much they can do. They need to come with an ID that has administrative powers and YaY can detect those.

I think that they will have it in all rooms sooner or later, they are testing it out in pool rooms for now it seems.
Is there any way you can tell when there is an administrator in the game room?

is any way to avoid sending message to the lobby to we can be hide in our table as usually we do . I believe if our program spam in the lobby shouts the version and and name of our programs, this will flag attention in our ID

There is a way to avoid messages, in YaY.cfg file you can find this option:

Do you want to autokibitz messages to your table observers?
variable29 1

Just use: variable29 0

Also if you right click in ICS interaction window you can see Warning Option...There you can set it OFF.

Another classic example of people not reading the documentation. Sometimes I wonder if is worth it to answer.

Yes, we are here to help, but I am expecting harder questions, not these silly ones.

Oh well........
