The experimental version has code from the 4.5 branch. 4.4.x is in a feature freeze and wont have the seekgraph, dual bughouse board and other features that ICS users use.

I was going by the date, using the 'properties' feature to check the date the beta Winboard was released - which showed the date was few days before the release of 4.4.4. Thanks for this information.

Welcome all, 8)

Download - Portable Winboard 4.5beta + Houdini 1.5:

Description:

Updated portable setup of Winboard 4.5 beta (master build 01.12.2010.) with two strongest free chess engines:
Houdini 1.5 ( stronger than Rybka4!, see IPON rating list at: www.inwoba.de )
and Stockfish 1.9.1 (also very strong), for game analysis, and two much weaker chess engines (Delfi 4.5 and Phalanx) with variable strenght for training.

With Winboard you can play against chess engines, analyze/view games, play online chess (on internet chess servers like freechess.org),
or you can match two engines to play each other.
In Winboard 4.5 beta there are lot of new features, like ICS seek graph (in Internet Chess Server mode just click on an empty square and you will see seek graph), exploring variations, walking through engine main variation, etc.

Also included in this setup:

- Performance.bin opening book for UCI engines
- Small 3 piece Nalimov endgame tablebase
- Nice selection of pgn games
- Wooden, Marble and Green Marble board textures
- Chess Merida Font for representing chess pieces

NOTE: I am not author of software/data included in this zip file, I merely collected free stuff
and put it together in a way I like to use it.
I hope I have not violated any license or something like that.
For bugs and questions see references in readme1st.txt

If you like this download please rate it!

WinBoard 4.5 Beta downloads

hgm wrote:

I have prepared a beta installer package for WinBoard 4.5, but I have a very weird problem: When I run some engines through the Windows Start menu, the logo of the human usere sometimes shows up as a highly magnified spin button (which is not use by WB anywhere, btw). I am starting to suspect this is a Windows bug. Could anyone test if this is peculiar to my system?

The bug manifests itself when I run, Start -> WinBoard-4.5.0 -> Xiangqi Engines -> HaQiKi D, and then play a move (so that it becomes human vs engine). The white logo should then become the one from logos\hgm.bmp (or, if no logo in the name of the user exist, logos\dummy.bmp), but in stead it becomes a giant button. Same for Xiangqi Engines -> MaxQi. But with Xiangqi Engines -> Elephant Eye (and any of the engines in the Chess Engines submenu, including MaxQi!) my logo shows up normally. Both Shogi Engines entries again produce the button.

The 4.5.0 beta installer can be downloaded from

Code: Select all

http://hgm.nubati.net/WinBoard-4.5.0.exe
For this test it might be best to rename hgm.bmp to your own username.

The weird thing is that when I start the same engine through the startup dialog, using the same file with settings (e.g. @mini.ini for mini-Shogi) as the menu shortcut uses as "additional options", everything works normally.

Speaking of 4.5 beta. Some of you might find this interesting as to what 4.5 offers.

Lately, HGM has been working on a branch that supports non-chess games
(I'd like to see Arena try that!)

[EDIT] oops posted wrong link

Using engines to cheat:
- It is not ethical,
- It is useless, nothing is gained (how can one be proud of a score earn with dishonesty?)
- You will be baned, sooner or later,
- It gives us (the true chess engine players) a bad reputation.
