frozen timer in yahoo chess

Postby linasinblues » 02 Jan 2008 03:48

i played with manila cx 2 today twice where my time got frozen at the last seconds. theres no way that he can beat me with my time of 14 sec left and he had 2 sec left. by the time the new game showed, i lost that game. can he freeze your time while playing? i know my connection was great because all my shouts are going in. i thought at first that maybe its internet freeze but it wasn't.

Of course all your shouts will go in, or even kibitz. But he can't see that can he?

Of course I didn't. Your point is that your time pauses but you know your connection is good because all your shouts are coming in.

Is not crazy at all. Let me explain.

When you move, your script issues a client command to Yahoo, Yahoo receives this move-command and issues a move-server command so everyone (you, your opponent and any observers) can see the move you just made. The period between the time your computer issued the move command and the time Yahoo validated it with a server move command should be fairly short (in the order of thenths of milliseconds) but guess what? fricking lag comes into play here also and Winboard has not way to compensate for this. The clock gets updated every move and it is here when you see the differences in time.

I've been hundreds if times in situations where it looks like I am 5 seconds ahead of my opponent and it seems that he or she is stuck or not moving, but when he moves (aparently)10 seconds later and the clocks get updated is here where I realized that now I am 5 seconds behind.

I know it sounds confusing, but that's the way it is. Bottom line, if Yahoo Chess server is experiencing lag, stay away from 1/0 games.

Good luck,

so do you think something like this NIC card have some help with the lag?

I dont think it will be advisable to buy a 200 dollar NIC for this. From what I read, this card will minimize to some extent your computer network latency and that's about it. It wont help you with Yahoo's lag, or the lag exisiting between your ISP and Yahoo chess server.

Unless you have a strong setup(engine, book,TBs,etc), a good computer and a good Internet speed/bandwidth, I suggest you stay away from 1/0 games.

matematiko, if you have one good reason for players to stay away from 1/0 games, me and the rest of the players in yahoo chess might(?) stay away from 1/0 games. i don't see any reason why a player would stay away from 1/0 games. just commenting.

I think matematiko is just advising you that 1/0 might not be the best timer for you and that you may get better results playing with a longer timer if you dont have "a strong setup(engine, book,TBs,etc), a good computer and a good Internet speed/bandwidth"

Interesting, You think? Now I find chessbuddys optimised timer is between 2 and 5 minutes. Seems nothing special at 1 minute games. (my oppinion).
