error causing loss

Postby quade1337 » 30 Dec 2011 05:34

Randomly my winboard will display an error msg during a game

couldn't parse move "e5f6" from ICS (not always "e5f6" sometimes its a different move") and this will cause the play to stop. The clock will just rundown and I get a loss.

I am not sure if this will help, but somewhere in the options look for "Test Legality" and remove the check mark.

I hope it helps, please post results.

Good luck,

You are very welcome !!!!

Regards,

I hate to say negative things about WinBoard since its the backbone of YaY/YaYp and most importantly because is being maintained by a good group of people headed by Mr. H.G. Muller. But we do not need WinBoard to test legality of moves, because:

1.- YaY and YaYp do this inheritaly.
2.- Most engines do this by themselves.
3.- WinBoard involvement with too many variants makes its Legality test unreliable (Just my opinion).

A good suggestion will be to feed PGNs of games with this error to the WinBoard forum....Hopefully Mr. Muller and/or his team will find the culprit (if any).

Good luck,

I am having a problem on my secondary pc. The game will run fine in the beginning but during the match it will just stop moving and the clock just runs down. Using same polyglot setup as main pc.

Considering this problem is similar to the ealier problem effectively deliquesced, and you're adopting its bug-free settings to another PC, I have no clue what the problem could be this time around.

All I can suggest at this point is, ensure that you have correctly and completely transferred ALL settings that worked in prior case, or in your primary PC. These includes

UCIVersion=2 [for engines with UCI_x options],
SyncStop=false,

and perhaps the option:
Chess960=false, if H2.0 has this UCI opotion - although like I said earlier, chess960=either 'true' or 'false' is now handled by Winboard [TM & 4.4+ versions] and will ignore chess960=true IF chess variants played are non-chess960.

It seems to be working with the default rybka 2. But I went try to change the engine to houdini 2.0c or deep rybka 4.1 it just stops playing during the game.

It seems to me you need to change the contents of PolyGlot.ini to that of whatever engine you wish to use. For example, to use Houdini 2.0c, just copy the INI file of Houdini 2.0c to another directory, then rename it to PolyGlot.ini and then replace the PolyGlot.ini file for Rybka 2.

Another possibility that comes to mind is, perhaps, spaces between an executive file of your engine. To illustrate, make sure there are no spaces in "EngineCommand=" (i.e., Houdini_2.0c_x64.exe. )
If there are spaces, then you need to put quotation marks (" ") around the engine with spaces.

If these don't work, then you would have to be very detailed. I don't know what's going on in your PC, since the setup is basically a duplicate of the one that works in your primary PC.

Everything seems fine. Some Window OS hide known extension - which is fine. It might pose a problem if OS is supposed to show hidden file extensions but you didn't put the .exe AFTER the name of an executive file. I doubt this is the problem here, otherwise you would have gotten an error relative to file extensions etc etc...

Since being able to setup PolyGlot, I haven't used YaY's setup - which was intended to assist those not familiar with setting up PolyGlot. My point is, if YaY's setup comes with "a PolyGlot.ini" - which I assume contains engine settings meant for Rybka 2.x, have you CHANGED the contents of this default PolyGlot.ini to reflect that of Houdini 2.0c, as I suggested?

Here is my last resort, as I'm honestly all out of ideas/solutions to the cause of the problem/s for you:

1. Ensure your engine or its INI file-settings uses a .bin book. This you've done, evident by the settings posted above.
2. Verify that your Winboard GUI is using book. On its Menu, go to Options\Common Engine Settings. There's a navigation pane by Use Book: Navigate to the book you intend to use.
3. Then check these: Use Book & First has Own Book (and perhaps, Second has Own Book), as shown below:

The rest of YOUR settings would be based on personal preferences.

Another possibility just occurred to me: Adjudications.

Unless you tampered with it somehow, this would explain why you play few moves (based on what was set for the Adjudicate draw after: # moves option). For example, if you put in 15 for Adjudicate draw moves after: # moves, your engine WILL stop playing after 15 moves till its time runs out.

Assuming this was tampered with, navigate to: Options\Adjudications. Copy these values & settings, exactly as shown below, for your Winboard GUI setting for Adjudications:

That's it. My LAST try.
