Editing Perl Files

Postby matematiko » 20 Oct 2007 01:37

Editing perl scripts with notepad and such is terrible dangerous because they do not detect errors.

In case you do not know, activestate has a free perl( and other scripting languages like PHP, Python, Ruby and Tcl)
editor.

Go to http://activestate.com/ look around for Komodo Edit and download it.

Of course there are better editor$ but they co$t money.
I particulary like ActiveState Komodo 2.5 professional, but I guess I am not supossed to tell you to go and look in
e-mule or torrentz.com for a cracked version because that is illegal.

I have been using KWrite, the default text editor in PCLinuxOS LiveCD. But after rebooting today, I noticed Kate. They all have good syntax highlighting. It certainly makes things a lot easier than when I open up the perl files in windows with WordPad or Notepad (ugh all black text).

I'll try to attach this picture for example.

Stupid me, I keep assuming everybody uses a Windows OS.

Sorry, I do not have an opinion in what will be a good perl editor under Linux but for Windows I do recomend Komodo.

What linux distro do you use zappa? I have Suse 10.2 but is in the back burner at this moment.

At the moment, I am using PCLinuxOS LiveCD distro. Historically I've used SuSE, and Ubuntu mainly. But I've tinkered around with Red Hat/Fedora, Mandrake--err Mandriva, and lots of other distros as well. Personally, the distro doesn't matter to me as much as the desktop environment. I prefer the GNOME desktop environment and they have a good basic editor in Gedit. But as you can see at the moment I am using the KDE desktop environment now.

Whatever works... ;)

Concerning STUCI and why it's never really done... here's a metaphor: Instead of being a construction worker, I'd rather be an architect.
Losing too many games because of a slow PC? No problem, nUCI it!

I'm smart and want to modify my ytoics.pl but do not how..h

Postby matematiko » 20 Oct 2007 09:13

As you all know, YtoICS(and its forks) are written in perl.
Is perl the best (scripting) language? I don't know, I guess all depends
on what you want to accomplish. Perl is mostly a text manipulation language
and I take my hat off to the author of YtoICS( Chris Howie) for beeing able to
write such a nice piece of art.

One of the reasons I love perl over C++ is that not compiler is needed, you do your
changes and you can test your "program" or script in the fly.

That beeing said, for those interested in learning perl, I like to recomend
Robert's Perl Tutorial, it is so popular that a google search will render many sites
hosting that tutorial. If you follow that tutorial it will take you to a high novice
level and that's all you need to play with your YtoICS script.

Cheers

YaY Ultimate Perl does not need ActivePerl.

STUCI I guess any version is good but 5.10 does not have the tk modules pre-installed and 5.8 does. Also, STUCI needs the module Crypt::SSleay or something like that.
