64bit vs 32bit with just 1 gig of ram

An ICS Emulator for YAHOO Chess

64bit vs 32bit with just 1 gig of ram

Postby pernicus » 28 Dec 2008 07:48

will yay/poly/engine run any different with a 64bit OS vs a 32bit OS if the computer only has 1gig of ram?

...and will the computer at all run any better with the 64bit OS if it only has 1 gig of ram?

not sure if this is where it needs to go or not

and to run the perl script what all do i need to do besides downloading and installing perl 5.10? do i need any additional modules etc?

Polyglot will still perform at optimal strength as long as the game(s) you're playing does not require huge amount of RAMS (Memory) - like in long games regardless if the OS is 32bit or 64bit. The difference between the 32bit and 64bit OS is that the 64bit engines + 64bit OS generally run or calculate faster hence an increase in ELO over the 32bit Engines + 32bit OS.

As with using YaY or STUCI ICS Emulators, the best version of Perl to install is Active Perl 5.8.8 Build 822 as it contains certain modules the later versions of Active Perls lack in order to run YaY and/or STUCI.
Besides the installation process, there's really nothing extra to do - if you're using YaY-Perl only (*STUCI will require several "steps" in conjunction with installing Perl).

Forgive me for being hard at you, but you are the first "did not read the documentation victim" of YaY 3 so you will get the honor of setting the example.

Why in the hell we spent hours and hours and hours writting the documentation if you guys don't take 5 minutes to read it? Next time we won't write any documentation at all. Crap, even better: there wont be a next time. Why should we put all this effort in writting YaY and all the documentation included if you don't honor this effort by at least reading the documentation?

The answer to this part of your questions is already there. I quote from the very fricking second paragraph of Commands and Notes.txt :

...... If you are planning on runing the pl version, then you need to install ActivePerl and the tk and Crypt::SSleay modules. Version 5.8 of ActivePerl comes with the tk module but not the Crypt::SSleay module. Version 5.10 (what happened to version 5.9?) comes with Crypt::SSleay module but not the tk module. It is beyond the scope of this document to tell how to install these modules. Remember, Google is your best friend...............

See? Please people....read the documentation before you wast our time.

Don't get me wrong...we like to help people.... but people that help themselves first and only asks for help after doing everything in their hands.

Cheers,

P.S. 64 bits? What O.S.? I woudn't run Vista 64 bits in 1 Gig of RAM, even if they put a gun to my head..... XP 64? Well maybe.
Using engines to cheat:
- It is not ethical,
- It is useless, nothing is gained (how can one be proud of a score earn with dishonesty?)
- You will be baned, sooner or later,
- It gives us (the true chess engine players) a bad reputation.

...hmm the documentation? apparently it's in the .exe file that I haven't downloaded yet because i was going to wait till I got my new computer in a week to install it instead of messing with the properly working yay_2 that I have installed already...I didn't know it would stir such disdain, I don't see where anyone has said that the instructions were in the exe file the only thing i've read was that you had to run the exe to get the .pl script

xp64 is fine with 1gb of ram, as long as your hardware has good driver support for 64bit windows xp.

64bit os will perform much better for chess, as your engine (in the case of Rybka) would be aprox 60% faster with 64bit compared to 32. So it would be equal to overclocking your system by 60% and sticking with 32 bit.

Note: For Vista I recommend at least 2GB of ram.

The YaY 3 pl is now available for download separately :ok

i was thinking about putting xp64 on this computer 1.8 ghz AMD 64

the new computer is a laptop with 2.8ghz intel core2duo(t9600) with 4gig 800mhz ram running vista business 64bit(as much as i hate vista there is better driver support for it :crasha )
maybe with the new comp i wont run out of time constantly in 1/0 games
